Ryleigh fell ill while on holiday with her family in North Wales, prompting her parents to rush her to the hospital. But medical staff missed crucial clues in her blood that indicated a potentially serious muscle problem called rhabdomyolysis. Despite these warning signs, Ryleigh was discharged without the necessary intervention. It wasn’t until three months later, when Ryleigh was struggling to breathe, that her parents, Caroline and Andrew, rushed her back to the hospital.
Tragically, she suffered a heart attack and died at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on November 8, 2021. During the subsequent inquest, District Coroner Alan Wilson highlighted several missed opportunities to examine Ryleigh’s condition before her initial release. Diane Rostron, a medical malpractice lawyer, emphasized that the hospital had received clear advice from her colleagues to seek consultation with a neuromuscular expert.
If the hospital had followed this advice, it could have diagnosed rhabdomyolysis and sought guidance on treating flare-ups. This crucial information could have significantly improved Ryleigh’s treatment and allowed her parents to effectively manage her condition. Caroline and Andy, Ryleigh’s distraught parents, firmly believe their daughter’s death could have been prevented.
They expressed their profound sadness and their determination to ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances of their untimely deaths. They believe Ryleigh might still be alive today if the hospital had provided her with the proper care.
Chris Barben, chairman of the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, expressed his deepest condolences to Ryleigh’s family and all those affected by this tragedy. The Trust is committed to carefully reviewing the coroner’s findings and taking steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. Caroline’s daughter-in-law, Katie Hobbs, organized a charity event and participated in the 2022 Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise funds for The Compassionate Friends.
