A week after she disappeared in Frontignan, Hérault County, Maddy Giansili’s body was found near a pond. The circumstances of her death remain unclear to investigators.

After a week-long search, the body of 18-year-old Maddy Giansili was found late in the morning of Tuesday, February 10, the Montpellier prosecutor announced.

The young woman disappeared on February 3 in Frontignan, Hérault County. She was eventually found near a pond in the Salins district, our colleagues at Midi Libre reported.

Prosecutor Thierry Lescouarc’h confirmed Tuesday evening that “the body of the young woman who disappeared earlier that day was discovered by a witness who immediately notified the police.” The investigation into her disappearance has now focused on determining the cause of death.

After the body was discovered on the shore of a pond near Salins, “investigators from the Sète police station immediately went to the scene, accompanied by a forensic pathologist, at the request of the prosecutor’s office, to retrieve the body and allow all necessary technical and forensic tests to be carried out,” a representative of the prosecutor’s office stated. “The body was transported in the early afternoon to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Montpellier for an autopsy,” he added.

According to Le Midi Libre, Maddy Giansili left her family home on Tuesday, February 3rd to buy bread. She had no cell phone, no ID, no bank card, and only a few coins. The day after her disappearance, her family launched an appeal for witnesses to help locate her.

Consequently, a case of disturbing disappearance has been opened, led by the Family Unit at the Sète-Frontignan Police Station. By analyzing city surveillance footage, investigators were able to reconstruct the young woman’s day. According to a regional newspaper, she was spotted talking to another person for approximately twenty minutes, between 5:30 and 6:00 PM. On Monday, February 9, the National Police again asked witnesses to identify this witness, which allowed investigators to rule out one of the leads they were considering.

Following the discovery of the young woman’s body, the Montpellier prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the circumstances of her death.  Investigators will need to determine how Maddy Giansili ended up in Les Salins and whether a third party was responsible for her death  . Forensic examinations are still ongoing.
