Surfer and singer Justine Mauvin is fighting for her life. 

She was hospitalized in intensive care after a serious road accident that occurred on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, while driving along the coast of Reunion Island.

Her condition is reportedly critical. The athlete suffered a head injury when a piece of metal falling from a van pierced her windshield. It is believed the projectile struck the wheels of the car behind her, causing a chain reaction. The French athlete was immediately taken to the emergency room, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.

According to the daily Réunion la   1ère  , Justine Mauvin   “is in hospital in intensive care in a serious condition, and her life hangs in the balance   .”   According to   the Quotidien de La Réunion et de l’océan indien,   her family is asking for their privacy to be respected after   “some people tried to enter the ward where Justine is currently staying, impersonating relatives or doctors   .” Her family said they were   “deeply shocked   ,” adding that   “following these incidents, the police have taken measures to ensure the safety”   of the victim.

Who is Justin Mauvin?

The 31-year-old   surf prodigy rose to fame for her longboarding skills, winning   the French national championship in 2014 and 2016, and then finishing third in the world championship.   Her passion for the water sport began at the age of nine, and she practiced it between Reunion Island and the Basque Coast, quickly rising through the ranks to launch her professional career. In addition to her athletic achievements, Justine Mauven, also known as   Sibu Manai (which means “nurture your inner flower” in Mentawai), decided to trade the surfboard for a microphone and dedicate herself to her other passion: music. Under this moniker, she released the EP “Vavanguèr”   in 2020     , offering pop music with Creole and Afro influences, reflecting her heritage and travels.
