A Helpful Car Feature That Can Improve Visibility While Driving at Night

Driving after dark presents a different set of challenges than daytime travel. Lower light levels make it harder to judge distance, identify obstacles, and respond quickly to changing road conditions. One of the most common frustrations for drivers at night is glare from the headlights of vehicles behind them. When that light reflects directly into the rearview mirror, it can cause brief discomfort, eye strain, and momentary distraction—exactly when focus is most important.

To address this issue, many vehicles are equipped with a simple but effective built-in feature that often goes unnoticed. Standard rearview mirrors typically include a small tab or lever beneath the mirror. When flipped, it slightly tilts the mirror and changes the reflective angle, reducing the intensity of light coming from behind. This adjustment makes bright headlights appear dimmer, helping drivers maintain clearer vision without completely losing awareness of traffic behind them.

In newer vehicles, this function is often automated. Auto-dimming rearview mirrors use sensors to detect strong light sources and automatically darken the mirror when glare increases. Once the brightness subsides, the mirror returns to its normal reflective state. Some models extend this technology to the side mirrors as well, further reducing glare and enhancing nighttime comfort.

Using this feature can significantly reduce eye fatigue and help drivers stay focused during nighttime trips. Since visibility is already limited after dark, minimizing unnecessary strain becomes especially important.
