In the garden, I found a slimy, reddish creature that gave off a strong, nauseating odor. I was horrified when I realized what it was.

When I discovered a strange, red, slimy shape in my garden, I initially thought it was some kind of creepy animal.
But what I found was far more surprising… and completely natural.

One morning, as I went out to water the flowers, I made a rather surprising discovery in the garden.

In the middle of the flowerbed, a strange, red, slimy, and foul-smelling shape seemed to emerge from the earth.

At first, I thought it was an animal, or perhaps something dangerous. But the truth was more reassuring… and just as fascinating.

A disturbing discovery in the garden

Picture this scene: I’m leisurely strolling through the garden with a coffee in hand when I suddenly notice something resembling a reddish, shiny, tentacle-shaped mass. What’s more, a very strong and unpleasant odor is emanating from it.

The exact same thing happened to me. My initial reaction was fear and dismay. I thought I’d discovered a giant larva or some strange animal. Intrigued and somewhat alarmed, I decided to do some research to understand what it was.

And the answer surprised me.

It was not an animal, but a very unusual mushroom.

The mysterious “creature” was actually a mushroom called Anthurus archeri, also known as “devil’s fingers.” The name itself is terrifying, and its appearance only intensifies that impression.

This fungus is native to Australia and Tasmania, but has gradually spread to many regions of the world. It can now be found in Europe, particularly in moist and forested areas.

What makes it so impressive is its shape: it resembles red fingers or small tentacles emerging from the ground, often covered in a sticky substance.

Why does this mushroom stink so badly?

This mushroom has a surprising characteristic: it emits a very strong odor, often compared to the smell of rotting matter. But this is neither a coincidence nor a problem.

In fact, this smell attracts flies, which play a very important role: they carry the spores of the fungus, which allows it to reproduce and spread.

So it’s a very effective, natural strategy, even if the smell is really unpleasant for us.

A mushroom that grows like an egg

Another fascinating detail: at first, this mushroom didn’t look at all like what I had imagined. Initially, it looked like a small, white “egg” lying on the ground. Over time, this egg opened, and the famous red shapes appeared and developed.

This transformation was so spectacular that it is hard to believe that something very strange appeared in my garden almost overnight.

Is it dangerous?

The good news is that this fungus is generally harmless. It’s best to simply avoid touching it with bare hands, as some people may experience skin irritation. It’s best to avoid touching it this way or use gloves if necessary.

In most cases, these symptoms disappear on their own after some time.

While it may look terrifying, it’s simply part of biodiversity and the natural cycle of organic matter decomposition. This is a striking example of a strange garden fungus I’ve observed in Europe.

Nature sometimes prepares surprises for us.

This story reminded me of something important: nature is full of surprises, and sometimes what seems disturbing at first glance is actually something completely natural.

We only know a small fraction of the plants, fungi, and species that surround us. Sometimes, all it takes is a glance into the garden to discover something extraordinary.

The next time I see something strange in nature, I won’t immediately panic: it might just be a natural curiosity that few people have the opportunity to observe.
