Between its teeth, it wasn’t holding a toy or a forgotten towel… but a little dress. And that dress belonged to a little girl who was barely a year old. Soaked and shivering, she weakly waved her arms, her face covered in tears, struggling to breathe, gripped by panic.

In a split second, the serenity of the vacation shattered. Screams echoed, lounge chairs toppled in the rush. Two parents came running from the other side of the pool, pale with terror.

The mother knelt in front of the animal and, hands trembling, pulled her little girl from the dog’s protective jaws. The father, in shock, was already frantically dialing emergency services. The child coughed, sputtered, but—miraculously—she was breathing.

Later, it became clear how the tragedy had almost occurred. When the ambulance arrived, the little girl, warmed and reassured, had finally fallen asleep in her mother’s arms, her breathing steady and calm. The doctors confirmed she was fine: she had swallowed a little water, but it was not serious.

And the dog? Exhausted, it simply lay in the shade, panting, its soaked fur clinging to its body, eyes half-closed, both tired and strangely wise.
