Just minutes before my wedding, my stepson asked me not to marry his father, and what he gave me afterward completely shocked me.
I met Jason in a small café, and I never imagined he would one day become my husband. Our relationship evolved very quickly, and he even introduced me to his 13-year-old son, Liam. He was a kind and respectful boy, and he accepted me as a mother.
We decided to have a small wedding, just with close friends and family. Everything seemed perfect. The big day arrived, and I was wearing a chic dress, ready to marry the love of my life.
A few moments before walking down the aisle, Liam came to see me. With a nervous look, he said he needed to talk to me privately. A bit worried, I followed him, and when I asked what was wrong, he replied, “Please, don’t marry Dad.”
He continued, his eyes sincere: “I love you so much. You’re kind, and you make the best pancakes…”
Then, he added, his voice trembling: “Dad is going to hurt you. And I don’t want to stay here and watch that.”
He then pulled an envelope from his pocket and handed it to me. What was inside broke my heart. I was devastated, unable to believe what I was seeing.

When I opened the envelope, my hands were shaking.
Inside, there were several recent debt notices, lawsuit documents for matters Jason had never mentioned… but the worst part was the printed emails.
Exchanges between Jason and someone named Mike, in which they coldly talked about a plan.

Phrases like: “Secure the assets through marriage” or “Once everything is legally protected, we initiate the divorce process” sent chills down my spine.
I couldn’t believe what I was reading.
Everything I thought was love turned out to be a strategy.

Liam, crying, said: “I didn’t want to lose you, but you deserve better.”
At that moment, everything changed.
I went into the room and announced that the wedding was canceled, without giving any explanation to Jason, so he wouldn’t suspect anything or harm Liam.
