Kham La, whose name means “darling” in Thai, is no ordinary elephant. Rescued from a tourist camp in Kanchanaburi where she was forced to perform in shows, she was saved in September 2015 after being separated from her mother at a very young age. The sanctuary gave Kham La and her herd a safe haven—a vast space where 35 elephants now live free and protected.

Despite integrating well into the herd, Kham La has never broken the strong bond she shares with Darrick.
