The girl looked peaceful – as if she were just sleeping. And then someone noticed: she was breathing.
Someone screamed. The doctor ran up, put his ear to her chest and shouted:
– She’s alive! She’s alive! Call an ambulance immediately!

The father couldn’t believe his ears until he heard a faint groan—soft but real. He knelt down and burst into tears.
The daughter everyone was already mourning was alive. A rare, hard-to-detect coma-like condition had confused doctors. The girl was declared dead too soon.
How could Dakota know that?

The answer came later. It turned out that the dog had been trained to detect minute changes in the girl’s breathing and pulse – she had been having severe seizures during which her vital functions almost disappeared.
Dakota had saved her before, warning her parents before help arrived. And this time, when everyone had lost hope – it was the dog who noticed that not everything was lost yet.
She was the last to hear her mistress breathe – and the only one who refused to accept her departure.
