In the past few weeks, my daughter kept complaining that she was sleeping badly and that her bed had become too cramped for her. At first I thought it was just a child’s imagination and didn’t pay much attention to her words 🫣

But one day I decided to install a camera in her room… and soon I realized with horror why my daughter had started feeling so cramped at night. 😨😱

Every evening everything happened the same way. I tucked Emily into bed, adjusted her blanket, read her a few pages from her favorite book, and kissed her on the forehead before turning off the light. She had long been used to sleeping alone in her room, and it had never caused any problems.

And for many weeks everything worked perfectly.

But one morning Emily quietly came into the kitchen while I was making breakfast. She was still sleepy, wearing socks, with a tiny drop of toothpaste in the corner of her mouth. She hugged me around the waist and softly said that she had slept badly.

I asked what had happened, thinking she had simply had a nightmare.

She thought for a moment and then said a strange sentence.

“Mommy, my bed has become smaller.”

At first I even laughed and replied that her bed was so big that another person could easily fit in it.

But she shook her head and seriously said that at night it becomes cramped.

At that moment I didn’t pay much attention, because children sometimes say strange things. However, the next day she said the same thing. And the day after that again.

Sometimes she said that she kept waking up during the night. Sometimes she complained that it felt as if someone was pushing her in her sleep. One evening she suddenly asked me something that made my stomach tighten.

She quietly asked if I had come into her room during the night.

I knelt down in front of her and calmly said no. I explained that at night I sleep next to her dad and don’t go anywhere.

Then she stayed silent for a moment and quietly added that sometimes she feels as if someone is lying next to her.

I quickly smiled and told her it was just a dream. But at that moment I myself started to feel uneasy.

That evening I told my husband about it. He had returned after a long shift at the hospital, tired and irritated, and simply waved it off. He said that children often make up such things and that our house is completely safe.

I didn’t argue, but my fear for my daughter’s safety didn’t disappear.

The next day I bought a small surveillance camera and quietly mounted it in the corner of Emily’s room. The camera was almost invisible and worked silently.

On the first night everything looked completely normal.

In the recording there was only my daughter peacefully sleeping in the middle of the bed. She breathed softly, sometimes turned a little in her sleep, and nothing strange happened. I even started to think that it really had all just been a child’s imagination.

But one night I woke up around two in the morning and went to the kitchen to drink some water. Out of habit I opened the camera app on my phone and decided to simply glance at the screen.

And at that moment my heart seemed to stop.

Because the bed was no longer empty.

And in that moment I realized with horror why my daughter had been feeling cramped all this time 😲😱 The continuation of the story can be found in the first comment 👇👇

Someone was lying next to Emily.

For a few seconds I just stared at the screen, trying to understand what was happening. The camera showed an adult quietly lying beside my daughter.

It was my mother-in-law. She was quietly lying next to Emily, covered with the edge of the blanket.

And in that moment I immediately remembered our old argument.

A few months earlier we had a serious fight because I decided that Emily should sleep in her own room. My mother-in-law had then literally attacked me with accusations.

She said I was a bad mother, that small children shouldn’t sleep alone, that they might get scared at night, that something might happen to them.

I calmly but firmly told her that my daughter should have her own room. She was deeply offended. And now I understood what had been happening.

When the whole house fell asleep, she would quietly get up at night, go into Emily’s room, and lie down next to her until morning. She was convinced she was doing the right thing and helping the child, without even thinking that she was actually frightening her and making her feel uncomfortable.

The next morning we had a very serious conversation. I didn’t remove the camera.

And my mother-in-law no longer has any right to interfere with how I raise my daughter.
