Carlton Smith, a West Virginia University police officer, gained internet fame after delivering a stunning performance of the national anthem at a men’s basketball game.
On January 12, while on duty at the WVU Coliseum, Smith was approached by university administrators with an urgent request. The scheduled performer for the national anthem was delayed due to heavy snowfall, leaving them in a bind. With just five minutes before the anthem needed to be sung, they turned to Smith for help.
Smith, 28 years old and a member of the university’s police department for four years, is well-known among colleagues for his singing ability. His vocal talent isn’t new to the public eye, either—13 years ago, he made it to the Hollywood round on American Idol. Even with his past experiences, Smith was caught off guard by the sudden request to perform in front of 14,000 spectators at the Coliseum.
Recalling the unexpected moment, Smith shared that someone approached him, asking if he could sing. He agreed, requesting a bottle of water before stepping onto the court. A cheerleader quickly brought him the water, and soon, he was standing center court, waiting for his cue to begin the anthem. As his name was called, he sang with confidence, delivering a heartfelt rendition of the national anthem.
Smith’s impressive performance quickly became a viral hit, amassing over 2 million views on YouTube. When not working, Smith pursues his love for music by singing in church and performing with a band during open mic nights. “It’s something I truly enjoy,” he said, reflecting on his passion for music.
