I was climbing up the ladder to cut the dry branches from the tree when my dog suddenly started barking insistently and pulling me down by my pant leg. At first, I thought he had simply gone crazy or was playing and might accidentally push me off the ladder 😱😢
I tried to shoo him away and even got angry at him, but a few seconds later something completely unexpected happened. 😨
I was already halfway up the ladder and reaching with the pruning shears toward the dry branches of the old apple tree near the house. The morning had felt strange from the very beginning. The sky was covered with heavy gray clouds, and the air was still and humid, like before a strong rain. I could feel the weather changing, but I decided to finish the job anyway because those dry branches had needed to be removed for a long time.
I had set up the ladder earlier that morning, carefully leaning it against the trunk and checking that it stood firmly. I climbed a few steps and was about to cut the first branch when I suddenly felt someone pulling my pants from behind.
I turned around and for a moment I was even confused.
My dog was trying to climb up the ladder after me. His paws were slipping on the metal steps, his claws scraping against the metal, and his eyes were wide open, staring straight at me.
“Hey, what are you doing?” I said with a nervous smile. “Get down.”
I waved my hand, hoping he would walk away, but the dog didn’t leave. On the contrary, he climbed higher, placed his front paws on the ladder, and suddenly grabbed my pant leg with his teeth.
He started pulling. Hard.
I jerked suddenly and almost lost my balance.
“Have you gone crazy? Let go!” I said angrily.
But he didn’t let go. The dog kept pulling me down, bracing his paws and barking as if he was trying to stop me at any cost.
At first I got angry, but after a few seconds I realized that this didn’t look like a game at all. He had never behaved like this before. There was something different in his eyes.
As if he was trying to tell me something.
I tried to climb higher again, but the dog immediately yanked my pant leg so hard that I instinctively grabbed the ladder with both hands.
I sighed heavily and started climbing down.
“Alright, that’s enough,” I muttered. “If you don’t calm down, I’ll lock you up.”
The dog lowered his head, as if he felt guilty, but I still led him into the kennel and closed the door. I thought that now I would be able to finish the work calmly.
But at that exact moment something happened that terrified me, and suddenly I understood why my dog had been acting so strangely 😱😲 The continuation of this unusual story can be found in the first comment 👇👇
I walked back to the ladder and placed my foot on the first step. And at that very second a sharp cracking sound came from above my head.
The sound was loud and dry, as if something had snapped in half. Instinctively, I looked up. And I saw a huge dry branch breaking away from the tree.
It was falling exactly where my head had been a second earlier. The branch crashed to the ground with a loud bang, shattered into pieces, and landed just a few centimeters away from me.
My legs immediately went weak. I stood next to the ladder staring at the massive broken branch while my heart pounded so loudly that I could hear it in my ears.
And only then did it hit me. My dog wasn’t bothering me. He was trying to stop me.
He sensed the danger before I did. Maybe he heard the cracking inside the tree or felt that the branch was about to break. I slowly turned toward the kennel.
The dog was watching me through the fence. His eyes were calm and attentive, and his tail moved gently from side to side as if he was waiting to see whether I would finally understand.
I walked over, opened the door, and knelt beside him. The dog immediately pressed himself against me.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and said quietly:
“You saved my life.”
From that day on, I never ignored his instincts again.
