Hours after the US intervention in the Middle East, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian declared that avenging the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is the right and duty of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The statement was broadcast on state television after confirmation of Khamenei’s killing in a US-Israeli attack on February 28, 2026. Trump faces tense hours, with the entire world watching with concern.
The Iranian president reacted to the US attack. It’s disturbing what he’s demanding.
Masoud Pezeshkian, in a statement broadcast on state television, emphasized that the assassination of Ali Khamenei transcends the bilateral conflict.
The Iranian president called the attack a “historic crime” and stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran has both the right and the duty to avenge its perpetrators and architects.
Pezeshkian pointed out that the death of Iran’s highest political authority and the preeminent Shia leader worldwide constitutes an open declaration of war against Muslims, especially Shiites. The statement came amid Iranian media reports confirming Khamenei’s killing during the US-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran on February 28, 2026.
Iran has declared 40 days of national mourning. Pezeshkian also announced seven days of public holidays to allow for public participation in mourning ceremonies.

Fatwa of Grand Ayatollah Nuri Hamedani
Ayatollah Hossein Nouri Hamedani issued a fatwa in which he stated directly:
- It is the duty of all Muslims to avenge the blood of the murdered leader.
The edict is of a religious nature and is addressed to the entire Muslim community.
Nouri Hamedani previously, in 2025, considered threats against Khamenei an act of moharebeh—war on God. The current fatwa following the assassination reinforces the call for vengeance as a religious duty.
Ali Larijani’s Threat and a Challenge to the Trump Administration
National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani stated:
- Today, Iran will strike the United States and Israel with a force unlike anything they have ever experienced.
The words were spoken in the context of Iranian retaliatory strikes already underway against US bases in the region and Israeli targets.
Larijani accused the US and Israel of trying to break up Iran and vowed that the armed forces would not leave any aggression unanswered. He also stressed his readiness to form a transitional leadership council following Khamenei’s death.
President Donald Trump had earlier warned Iran against any retaliation, declaring on Truth Social his readiness to strike “with force like never before.”
These mutual threats have created a situation where the Trump administration is facing a direct test in a climate of military escalation. Iranian state media broadcast statements live, and the IRGC announces the “most ferocious offensive operation” in history.
