At least 14 people were killed when a decades-old lake barrier burst in Taiwan, a government official said Wednesday, after Super Typhoon Ragasa pounded the island with torrential rain.

The barrier lake in eastern Hualien county burst Tuesday, washing away a bridge and sweeping into a town with a trail of thick sludge and mud.

“It was like a volcano erupting…. the muddy floodwaters came roaring straight into the first floor of my house,” Hsu Cheng-hsiung, 55, a neighbourhood leader of Kuang Fu township, told AFP.

Lee Kuan-ting, a Hualien County Government press official, said 14 people were killed and 18 injured.

The National Fire Agency said 124 people were missing.

“It was a disaster movie,” a local resident Yen Shau, 31, told AFP.

He said an hour before the lake burst, many people were still at the local supermarket and grocery store.

“Within minutes, the water had risen to halfway up the first floor,” he said

.

He said he couldn’t sleep Tuesday night for fear of another deluge from the lake, and on Wednesday was shoveling mud from his home.

“The mud was just too deep, too deep to dig out,” he added.

Footage released by the fire agency showed flooded streets, half-submerged cars and uprooted trees

.

Across Taiwan, more than 7,600 people were evacuated due to Typhoon Ragasa.

Taiwan experiences frequent tropical storms from July to October.

Typhoon Danas, which hit the island in early July, killed two people and injured hundreds as the storm dumped more than 50 centimetres of rain across the south over a weekend.

Adam Sandler Makes a Rare Appearance in a Tux at the Venice Film Festival Alongside His Glam Wife and Daughters

Sandler walked the red carpet at the premiere of his latest film, ‘Jay Kelly,’ alongside wife Jackie and daughters Sadie and Sunny

NEED TO KNOW

  • Adam Sandler arrived in a tux — a twist for him! — at the 2025 Venice Film Festival on Aug. 28 for the premiere of his film Jay Kelly
  • He walked the carpet with his wife, Jackie Sandler, and their two daughters, Sadie and Sunny Sandler
  • Sandler stars alongside George Clooney in Noah Baumbach’s latest comedy-drama

Adam Sandler arrived in style at the 2025 Venice Film Festival.

The actor walked the red carpet for the premiere of his new film, Jay Kelly, also starring George Clooney, at the Sala Grande theater on Thursday, Aug. 28.

Sandler, 58, stepped outside his usual sartorial choices, wearing a classic black tux with a white button-down shirt. He accented it with a black bowtie.

Meanwhile, his wife, Jackie, contrasted him in a strapless white dress that gathered at the bust and draped to the ground. The couple also brought along their two daughters, Sadie, 19, and Sunny 16. Sunny matched her mom in a white dress of her own, though hers was a halter-neck, while Sadie matched her dad in a black dress — making for a fully complementary set of outfits.

The Uncut Gems star’s ensemble deviates from his signature style, which typically includes oversize T-shirts, hoodies and shorts, as well as stylish sneakers.

His consistent looks — even at premiere parties — have earned him the reputation of “unintentionally” becoming a style icon.

“It’s funny as hell,” the Happy Gilmore star told Complex of his style icon status. “And whenever one of my kids or their friends talks to me about it… my wife’s like, ‘What the hell are we talking about right now? How did that happen?’ “

“But my wife [Jackie] always was nice to me about my clothes,” he added. “Even when we were young, others would say, ‘Would you put on something better than that? Your wife’s dressed so beautifully.’ My wife would say, ‘He’s comfortable like that. Let him do that. Leave him alone.’ “

He explained to PEOPLE in August 2024 that he doesn’t think too intensely about what he wears, and becoming a style icon was “accidental.”

“But here I am wearing goofy clothes, and I don’t know. I don’t think about it,” he said. “Whatever is in the closet, I grab it,” he insisted. “I think I got a bunch of the same socks, underwear is kinda similar too.”

Sandler continued, “I grab it, I don’t think about it much. Most people make fun of me in my family, but I keep moving.”

Clooney and Sandler star in Noah Baumbach’s latest comedy-drama film, where a famous actor, Jay Kelly (Clooney), and his friend and manager, Ron (Sandler), “embark on a whirlwind and unexpectedly profound journey,” which calls into question their choices, relationships, and legacies, per the movie’s synopsis.

Clooney recently praised Sandler’s performance during an interview with Vanity Fair, saying, “This film — more than any film Adam has done — shows what a beautiful, heartfelt, soulful actor he is.” Adding, “I kept telling the cast, ‘Don’t call him Sand Man. Don’t talk to him like he’s just some goofy comedian. He’s actually a really beautiful, wonderful actor.'”

“Because of what his paycheck is, which is doing big goofy comedies, when he does these other, beautiful, Uncut Gems kinds of movies, it reminds people of that. He’s not just a good comedian,” Clooney said.

Jay Kelly will release in select theaters Nov. 14 and on Netflix on Dec. 5.
