I was confused. What is this? A piece of jewelry? A thoughtful gesture? Maybe a souvenir?
It felt awkward to ask — I didn’t know anyone well enough, and I didn’t want to seem clueless.
For a moment, I even thought it was a purse holder or some kind of table decoration.
I was about to set it aside so it wouldn’t get in the way, when I saw the woman across from me carefully clip it onto her napkin and place the chain around her neck — and then it all made sense.

It turned out to be a napkin holder, once popular in aristocratic circles. It’s designed to protect your clothes from stains while eating.
Especially handy if you’re wearing a light blouse or dress, and there’s red wine or sauces on the menu.
I immediately copied her — and felt not only smarter, but a bit classier. Who would’ve thought such a vintage accessory is still in use?
Now I know: if you see a strange item at the table — don’t rush. Sometimes all you need to do is observe. And that chain with tiny clips now brings a smile to my face.
