I saw a strange object on the street – at first I thought it was just trash, but when I got closer, I was horrified

As I got closer, I realized: it was a grass snake. Crushed. A snake, right in the middle of a city street. People were hurrying by, cars driving past, but it seemed like no one else even noticed it—except me. I got chills.

And this wasn’t an isolated incident.

In recent weeks, the number of snakes has clearly increased. People have been sharing stories in local chats: someone found one in their garden, someone else saw one near their front door.

Some even reported snakes getting into apartments through ventilation shafts or cracks near balconies. It felt like they were everywhere—as if the boundary between “their” world and ours had disappeared.

Experts say this is due to climate change and the loss of their natural habitats. Grass snakes aren’t venomous, but seeing a snake near your home is still an unsettling experience.

What you can do to stay safe:

– Keep your yard (or balcony) tidy—don’t leave trash, piles of leaves, boards, or other hiding spots that could attract snakes.

– Seal ventilation openings and cracks—especially on lower floors.

– Check your shoes and bags if you leave them outside or in unheated areas.

– If you see a snake—don’t panic, don’t touch it, and call animal rescue services (check the number for your area).

Nature is pushing into the city—and we have to learn to live with it. But staying alert and cautious certainly won’t hurt.
