An award-winning actress passed away at the age of 43

Award-winning Belgian actress Émilie Dequenne passed away in March 2025 at the age of 43 from a rare cancer. She was best known for her breakout role in the 1999 film Rosetta, for which she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival.

Cause of death: Dequenne died from a rare form of adrenal gland cancer, known as adrenocortical carcinoma. She had announced her diagnosis in 2023.

Date of death: Sunday, March 16, 2025.
Location of death: A hospital outside of Paris.

Career highlights:
Her career was launched with Rosetta, a film that also won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1999.
She also won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes for Our Children in 2012.
Her other notable roles include appearances in The Girl on the Train (2009) and the BBC series The Missing.
She received a César Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Things We Say, The Things We Do in 2021.
