My husband and I were walking in the city park on that sunny day when a strange noise near an old oak caught our attention. On the trunk, a squirrel’s tail was twitching. As we approached, we saw that the squirrel had stuck its paw into a crack in the tree and couldn’t get it out. It struggled, scratched, but to no avail.

At first, we thought it was just a coincidence. My husband carefully helped the little animal free its paw. It seemed like the squirrel would immediately dash up the branches.

But instead, it stuck its paw into the same crack again! And got stuck again. We helped once more. And again… The squirrel seemed obsessed with what was hidden inside.

Finally, after another desperate attempt, it pulled its paw out — but not just that. In the squirrel’s claws, a strange object gleamed.

Finally, after another desperate attempt, it pulled its paw out — but not just that. In the squirrel’s claws, a strange object gleamed.

At first, we thought it was a nut. Small, round, with a grayish coating… But on closer inspection, I froze: it was not a nut at all, but a stone. Heavy, with a deep gleam inside, it looked frighteningly valuable.

Seeing this, we immediately grabbed both the stone and the squirrel — and went straight from the park to the police. Otherwise, no one would have believed such an incredible story.

At the station, the officers listened to us in amazement. One of them glanced at his partner and said: “Last night, a jewelry store was robbed. A batch of precious stones is missing.”

The police rushed immediately to the spot in the park. When they opened the crack in the old oak’s trunk, they found a whole pile of stones wrapped in rags inside. It turned out that the thieves, fleeing from pursuit, had hidden the loot in the tree’s crack, planning to return later.

But their plan was thwarted by the park’s small resident — the squirrel — who, guided by its instinct, tried to fetch the “nut.” In this way, it became an unwitting hero and helped solve the crime.
